My face sags with my dentures

My face sags with my dentures and it’s getting to be really annoying. I have worn dentures for 27 years and my dentist says that after wearing dentures for so long, sagging is unavoidable. He talked about a lot of different things that could be done but it all sounded like just another way to get more money out of me. My dentist really isn’t up to date with technology in his office, but he is a really good dentist. I’m wondering if there are types of dentures he doesn’t know about or something that could really support my face a little more. Are there any other options? Thanks. Ellie

Ellie – Your dentist is right. After years of having your teeth missing and wearing dentures, bone loss is unavoidable. Your jawbone supports your facial muscles, and when there are no teeth to stimulate the bone, it shrinks.

How Facial Sagging Can Be Improved

You told us that your dentist gave you several options, but you didn’t mention what they are. Once you start to experience facial sagging, there are specific things that can be done about it. They are reviewed below.

  • Bone grafting – Lost jawbone needs to be built up again. Bone grafting procedures build up the bone so it can support your facial muscles.
  • Implant-supported dentures – Implants are used to stimulate your jawbone and prevent shrinkage. They are also used to stabilize your dentures and provide a better fit. But bone grafting comes first if you don’t have enough natural bone to support implants.
  • Individual implants – This option is much more expensive than implant-supported dentures, because each missing tooth is replaced with an implant. But this solution will make you feel as if you have all of your natural teeth again.

In addition to speaking with your own dentist for more details, we recommend that you get a second opinion. Whenever major dental treatment is recommended, ensure you understand your options. An experienced implant dentist will give you more insight on what’s required to lift your facial muscles and prevent sagging. The correct dental treatment will improve your oral health and help you look younger.
